課程概述

The focus of this English Composition course is to reinforce and enhance the English proficiency of second-year students in the writing skill area. Students are expected to have already mastered the skills of writing well-structured sentences and paragraphs at the college level. In the first semester, students will be learning to write essays in various rhetorical modes. As different audiences will be needing different introductions, students will be practicing how to write the hook for audiences of different background. Different parts of an essay will be examined in detail, with special attention given to the thesis statement, allowing students to form essays with unity and coherence. Students will also learn how to correctly use punctuation, transitions, logic, and support to help them link the paragraphs into a cohesive whole.

Besides essays, other modes of writing, such as email communication and business letter, will be introduced based on students’ wants/needs.

課程目標
Students are encouraged to read in English as much as they can outside of class time as reading is one of the most effective ways to exploring writing styles and improving writing skills. Registering correct sentence structures and building vocabulary useful for writing can be achieved through reading. For this reason, throughout the course, students will also have chances to read their classmates’ work and provide feedback as their mentor.

Good writing habits will continue to be emphasized and practiced throughout the course to make students’ writing experience an enjoyable one. By the end of the first semester, students should be able to write comfortably essays of general topics and can write following the “preferable writing approach.”
課程要求
Students are required to keep a writing journal. They will be writing in their journal everyday starting the first day of class. Students may choose their own topic to write on outside of class. In class, each student will take turns to assign a topic for everyone to write on. In-class writing can be free-writing, timed writing, writing with a brainstorming session, etc.

Students should attend all classes and come to class on time and prepared. Attendance is taken seriously. Students who "need" to be late or absent should notify the instructor at least 2 days in advance. No make-up quizzes or exams are allowed. Late homework will NOT be accepted.

Students missing 4 or more classes automatically fail the course. Students who do not complete Book Review #1 and/or Book Review #2 are not allowed to pass the course.

Students wishing to sign up for this course must show up at the first class meeting to get the authorization code from the instructor. Priority will be given to those who have contacted the instructor in advance and those who demonstrate eagerness to learn and improve their writing skills.
